Edu Cardoso
Visual artist | Brazilian fantastic realism
Edu Cardoso is a Brazilian visual artist whose work investigates the border territories between reality and imagination, childhood and memory, instinct and civilization.
Through painting, drawing and sculpture, Cardoso builds a visual universe inhabited by hybrid creatures, human figures, animals, objects and characters that seem at once familiar and strange. In these compositions, figurative precision does not seek merely to represent the real: it serves as a starting point for unsettling it.
The work's language emerges from the meeting of personal memories, Brazilian popular culture, comics, mythologies and references from the collective imagination. These elements appear not as folkloric or nostalgic quotations, but as material for the construction of contemporary visual fables.
Series such as Cordão dos Bichos, Amigo Imaginário and Expressões Populares reveal an inquiry marked by the tension between the playful and the unsettling. Childhood appears not only as recollection, but as a symbolic territory where imagination, desire and instinct still coexist before being fully subjected to the conventions of the adult world.
Animality occupies a central place in this universe. Hybrid bodies, masks and fantastic creatures dissolve the boundaries between human and animal, reality and reverie, familiarity and strangeness. The fantastic thus becomes a way of investigating what remains hidden beneath the surface of everyday life.
Though deeply connected to the Brazilian imagination, Edu Cardoso's work addresses universal questions: memory, belonging, transformation, childhood, identity, and the persistence of imagination in the face of the processes of socialization.
Cardoso's practice establishes a singular dialogue between the technical rigour of the figurative tradition and the narrative freedom of fantastic realism. Brazilian culture ceases to be merely a subject and becomes a poetic field — a territory from which the artist builds images capable of crossing geographies and cultural repertoires.
Edu Cardoso builds contemporary visual fables in which the real provides the material and the fantastic reveals what the real alone cannot explain.
